What Will Happen to My Body in the First Trimester?

Hello Moms, we have talked about all the great things that happen in pregnancy but now it’s also time to understand some things that won’t feel so great, like nausea, morning sickness, mood swings, etc. We will be talking about these so you are prepared for all of these changes, so you won’t be surprised or scared… So let me prepare you. Your body is about to do something extraordinary and these are just the signs that it’s working.

The Nausea is Real

Between 50 to 80 percent of women experience nausea in the first trimester and it tends to peak around week 8. Morning sickness is a bit of a misleading name honestly because it can hit any time of day. If your nausea is so severe that you’re losing weight or getting dehydrated, please see your doctor. That could be a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum and it needs proper care.

Food Will Feel Strange

You might suddenly crave things you never cared about before. Or be completely repulsed by foods you used to love. Both are normal. Your body is just responding to the hormone changes happening inside you.

Your Tummy Will Feel Off

Bloating, gas and constipation are all very common in the first trimester. And here’s something nobody warns you about… your pants might feel tight early on and it’s not even the baby yet. It’s the hormone progesterone causing bloating. Heartburn can also start as early as week 10. But it’s all just the part of process.

Your Breasts Will Change

The surge of estrogen and progesterone will make your breasts feel sore and tender quite early on. And by the end of the trimester they’ll look noticeably fuller. It can feel uncomfortable but it’s your body preparing for what’s ahead.

Cramps and Back Pain

Around week 10 you might feel mild cramping or a gentle tugging sensation in your abdomen. That’s just your uterus stretching and growing and it is completely normal. Lower back pain is also common as your uterus expands and shifts things around inside you.

Some Light Spotting

A little bleeding or spotting in early pregnancy can be scary to notice. But it doesn’t always mean something is wrong. In the very early weeks it can simply be your baby (embryo) settling into the lining of your uterus and your body making room for them. It’s actually quite common and many women experience it without any problems at all.

That said, always check in with your doctor if you notice any bleeding just to be sure. It’s always better to know.

You Will Pee. A Lot.

The pregnancy hormone HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) makes you need the bathroom more than usual. And since your body is doubling its blood volume your kidneys are working overtime and pressing against your bladder. It’s a lot. Just know it’s normal.

The Exhaustion is No Joke

You might feel completely wiped out and wonder why. Your body is literally building a human from scratch. That takes everything. The good news is this extreme fatigue usually eases up once the first trimester ends. Rest whenever you can mumma. Seriously.

Vivid Dreams

You might start having the most intense, strange dreams. This happens because things like heartburn, a full bladder and restless legs wake you up during REM sleep, which is when dreaming happens. So you end up remembering them vividly. Completely normal.

Your Senses Go into Overdrive

Estrogen gives you a heightened sense of smell during pregnancy. Things that never bothered you before might suddenly make you feel sick. It’s annoying but it passes.

Skin and Hair Changes

Your skin might break out as the new hormones increase oil production. But on the bright side, your hair is about to look incredible. High estrogen levels stop your hair from shedding as much, leaving it thicker and glossier than ever. Enjoy that part.

Mood Swings

You might feel emotional, irritable or teary without knowing exactly why. That’s the hormones and the exhaustion talking. Be gentle with yourself through this. You’re carrying a lot, literally and emotionally.

Your body knows what it’s doing mumma. Every single one of these symptoms is just proof that something beautiful and miraculous is happening inside you.
